The Power of Dynamic Analyses in Biofilm Research

Biofilms are three-dimensional communities of microbes attached to a surface or to each other. Most researchers are very aware of biofilms’ spatial heterogeneity; however, their heterogeneity in time is usually ignored. In this webinar, Dr. Bastiaan Krom, Professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, will illustrate the power of dynamic visualization of microbial biofilms as he discusses the results of his laboratory’s elucidation of time-dependent processes in microbial biofilms.

Dr. Krom will share insight on:

1. The importance of Candida albicans binding for host invasion and the hitch-hiking mechanism.

2. Adhesion of oral biofilms and the importance of human buccal cells in the initiation of oral biofilms.

3. The discovery of a novel oral biofilm growth and dispersal process.
